Mega Megan Maloney steps into the boxing ring to face Argentine Adonis Eduardo. Since separating from her husband Korey, Megan has been cut off from her steady supply of wholesome marital sex, and the frustration is showing. Ed has been on a regular regimen of Mack’s attention, but is she enough for a stud like him? Theo’s gonna have his hands full with these two.
Beautiful!
This was a great bit of writing just FULL of character, and a great example of not only what sets the BWL apart from other sites in terms of quality and investment, but also of why we continue to read; the serialized nature of the narrative, which allows characters to continually evolve and grow…and no characters has grown more than Megan!
The great thing about comics as a narrative format is that unlike novels, which only have two streams of information (dialogue and narration), or movies which have two streams of information (dialogue and visual), comics allow for three streams of information (dialogue, narration, and visual), which was used very effectively here allowing us deeper into the subtext of the match, which, on the surface, would seem very a very pedestrian display of pugilistic excellence (it’s a great fight…a real donnybrock with some hard hits and knockdowns), but, when we delve deeper, reveals an equally violent internal struggle.
Megan, currently going through a divorce from her long time husband Korey, is even more conflicted than ever, and she is DEFINED by conflict. Having joined the League to please Korey, her experiences, at first, had a positive effect on their relationship as Megan became more open to experimentation…but this also proved an outlet for all the feelings and primal urges she had long surpressed due to her strict religious upbringing. On the surface she appears judgemental and prudish, but underneath she is filled with deep lusts and respressed yearning.
As this match demonstrates, having lost the stability of routine, and the surity of a monogamous relationship, Megan is now struggling with a new problem; for the first time in her life she has more freedom than she knows what to do with, and is in an environment that encourages indulgance. Going into this match, Megan is sexually frustrated and confused…she no longer as the restrictions on her that she previously has had; she is a grown woman and newly single, but she doesn’t know how to deal with that, so her hunger manifests in her desire to seduce Eduardo…but her pride won’t allow her to lose either. And so she struggles back and forth between, “I want to fuck him” and “I want to beat him.” It’s a great, compelling, character driven narrative that suggests a ton of story possiblities…I loved the callback to Megan’s encounter with Cindy, which I hope to see developed in some way!
I also loved the element of Megan’s attempts to seduce Ed coming at the expense of her student/mentor relationship with MacKenzie, and her running commentary illustrating the end of their friendship; another great beat I’d love to see developed!
I also have to commend Entropy and Sherlock on how Ed has developed, particularly in this match…his personality has become more strongly defined as of late, and he stands out as a strong character; giving him the bit of business with mis-pronouncing his colloquiallisms was a great gag, and I hope to see it continue, along with his dropping of Spanish phrases and metaphors (the Matador/Bull reference was a slick piece of writing…really liked it!).
Overall, in terms of sheer story, this was a stand out episode that displays the strengths of the BWL/BSF as a narrative medium; novel and character driven. Great stuff, guys!
Oh, and on the art side, Megan looked incredible in this one! I really loved the volume of her breasts, and how they moved and had weight and mass…the “new” style has been a quantum leap over the old! Fantastic stuff!
